Terracina was also called Volscian Anxur which is the name of Jupiter himself as a youth (Iuppiter Anxur or Anxurus), the tutelary god of the city. The construction of the Via Appia in 312 BC as well as the Via Severiana, from Ostia to Terracina, added to the importance of the place. The temple of Giove Anxur above Terracina dates back to the 4th century BC.
